Man’s activities are affected in several ways by the immediate environment he lives in and what condition he found himself. Any activity that gives pleasures and is engaged in form of choice and not from necessity can be considered recreation”. Park and recreation, the benefit is endless”. Therefore, Lagos being a study area with recreational facilities will be a place for the projected recreation parks.
Chapter one on Proposed Recreational Park
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Recreation is an activity that people voluntarily pursue for personal enjoyment or satisfaction, usually during their free time. Recreation takes variety of forms and occurs in places, depending on the choice of the individual. Some recreations are passive, such engage on recreation in their homes or communities or they may travel along distance for a recreation activity.
Since the end of World War II in 1945, recreation has become an important element in modern life. High incomes and improvement in working conditions and transportation have given many people more money, time and mobility for recreation. Today, recreation is a major industry. Recreation provides pleasures for millions of people but it may also make an important contribution to an individual mental and physical health. For example, a hospital often organizes recreational activities under trained supervisors as therapy for patients.
The proposal is a safe and multi-functional city park where all residents have direct influence on the eco systems and the structuring of the park. The terrain modeling allows for more functions and creates a flow of people that increases the security. The masterplan creates a comprehensive and flexible green area in Gellerup, which will raise its identity and create an active participatory urban space that will contribute to shaping of the future Gellerup. Therefore, this project report will examine in a broad overview of the social and planning philosophers that lie behind the location, programming and operation of the future of recreation. It is proposed to bring out visually and verbally the most creation new idea and speculative on what potentials these may hold for the future, taking into consideration the desire of children, adults and the community at large. MOTIVATION
A country with a high standard of living is bound to have a high participation in recreational park. The high standard of living referred to their centers on high disposable income, which is also accompanied by reduction in working hours and long leisure time.
These have to be money to spent, as well as the referee time to spend it. Some geographical and social factor previously discussed, on the introductory page.
This is one of the things been looked at to create an environment at Lagos, which will serve as a conducive atmosphere for the project and also to serve as a short time visit to the recreational area for the purpose of recreational education and business. It will therefore, include visitors, seminars, conventions etc. this will be phased out in stage of development for the smooth emerged of facilities, which are relevant and marketable at the time of implementation.
The primary orientation is toward providing guidelines for planning an individual outdoor recreation area or complex such as a state, county, or regional park. The planning guidelines are developed for large resource-based recreation complexes located in a ma1 enviro, nment and developed primarily around an extensive natural resource base that, in itself, provides opportunities for outdoor recreational activitv.’ The primary focus is on public recreation areas, although the guidelines can be applied (with minor adjustments) to private areas.
The principal audience addressed is the group of reasons who prepare development plans public outdoor recreation areas. The guidelines are broad enough to be applicable to a wide variety of natural resource bases. In this paper, public outdoor recreation development planning is defined as a rational and systematic process, integrated with all the important social and physical factors, for determining appropriate action in developing the natural resource to provide outdoor recreational opportunities. The guidelines were developed from several sources. General planning theory, methodology, methods, and techniques for various kinds of planning (e.g., urban, enterprise, and military) were reviewed, integrated, and adapted to fanning public recreation. Literature on a phases of outdoor recreation planning (theoretical and applied studies, and recreation proposals and plans) proved to be valuable sources of information, since they are directly related to the subject of this study. Related subjects such as forestry and land-resource economics, economic growth and development, consumer economics, and decision theory, were also used to develop the guidelines. Therefore, the study aims to examine a proposed recreational park.
Statement of the Problem
A wide range of recreational facilities (including golf clubs) had hitherto been the product of panic adoption of ill-considered facilities on unsuitable sites. Many if not all, are apparently lacking in unique architectural character that could be perceived as growing out of the environment with voids that make way for the utilitarian, symbolic, therapeutic leisure and visual elements of landscape.
Considering the heavy population, hustle and bustle of the city, there is therefore the need to create a more spacious, accessible, coherent, adaptable and sophisticated recreation center; a better deal for tourists.
Objectives of the Study
Materials and forms are used to communicate ideas and meanings in Architecture. When the fusion of architecture and water is treated carefully and creatively, the potential for meaningful expression is practically limitless. The aim of this project is to create an avenue where the tourism potentials of the coast can be show cased and to incorporate the different facilities required.
Specific objectives include: –
(a) Provision of an interceptor area where the availability of new sport and recreation facilities may reduce pressures in the city center.
(b) It would act as an opportunity area where environmental improvement and landscape regeneration would encourage participation in sport recreation.
(c) Providing a landmark for Lagos state while meeting the needs of local and international tourists alike.
Research Questions
(a) What is the provision of an interceptor area where the availability of new sport and recreation facilities may reduce pressures in the city center?
(b) Can recreational park act as an opportunity area where environmental improvement and landscape regeneration would encourage participation in sport recreation?
(c) Is there any landmark for Lagos state while meeting the needs of local and international tourists alike.
Research Hypotheses
Hypothesis I
H0: There is no significant provision of an interceptor area where the availability of new sport and recreation facilities may reduce pressures in the city center
H1: There is a significant provision of an interceptor area where the availability of new sport and recreation facilities may reduce pressures in the city center
Hypothesis II
H0: Recreational park act is not an opportunity area where environmental improvement and landscape regeneration would encourage participation in sport recreation
H1: Recreational park act is an opportunity area where environmental improvement and landscape regeneration would encourage participation in sport recreation.
Significance of the Study
This study will be of immense benefit to other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.
Apart from aesthetic considerations, technique and functionality has a Major role to play in the control and improvement of the quality of the built environment. A well-landscaped recreation environment acts as an intermediary that negotiates connection or separations between people and the built environment, thus communicating meanings through proper utilization of forms and materials.
Scope of the Study
This study is on the proposed recreational park in Lagos State. The scope of this thesis will be limited to the provision of facilities for social activities. This would include provision of services and information center, golf clubhouses, golf course, shops, allied sporting activities and miscellaneous with the detail landscaping of the center as a key design determinant.
Limitations of the study
The demanding schedule of respondents at work made it very difficult getting the respondents to participate in the survey. As a result, retrieving copies of questionnaire in timely fashion was very challenging. Also, the researcher is a student and therefore has limited time as well as resources in covering extensive literature available in conducting this research. Information provided by the researcher may not hold true for all businesses or organizations but is restricted to the selected organization used as a study in this research especially in the locality where this study is being conducted.
Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
Finally, the researcher is restricted only to the evidence provided by the participants in the research and therefore cannot determine the reliability and accuracy of the information provided.
