INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Reading constitutes a channel of deriving meaning from books, prints and documented material and requires that the reader be active participants in reading. According to Fatimayin and Lawal (2010), reading constitutes not only the ability to read English language and literary texts, but also journals, magazines, newspapers, periodicals, etc. Reading provides a wider understanding of subjects, developes ones interest and enhances deeper understanding and a wealth of experiences. According to Potter (2011) reading stimulates people’s imagination and leads to quick learning, wider views, expanded horizons, and deeper knowledge. Further he stated that it enhances good imagination, better curiosity and the ability to handle complex ideas. Reading facilitates the learning of other subjects and facilitates the determination of academic progress. It is also through reading that educational objectives can be accomplished. Reading promotes the acquisition of other language skills. Bright and McGregor (1971:3) stated that reading is the foundation of the English language syllabus which facilitates the development of large vocabulary required for clear and accurate oral and written expression. The study seeks to appraise the effect of reading club on reading habits of secondary school students in Nigeria. A case study of booldoz book club.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The importance of reading cannot be overemphasized as it enhances the acquisition of knowledge, provides a wider understanding of subjects, developes ones interest and enhance deeper understanding and a wealth of experiences. However, in spite of its importance many Nigerian students have poor reading habit. Furthermore the act of reading is not taught in schools and the limited public libraries and inadequate facilities constitute the other challenges militating the cultivation of good reading habits. However the propagation of good reading culture is essential for the development of students’ academic performance .Therefore the role of reading club constitute one channel to boost student’s capacity to read. But the limited number of reading clubs has also affected the reading culture among students in Nigeria. Reading clubs are open safe, informal spaces provided for students freely converge to read books and other literary works. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the effect of reading club on reading habits of secondary school students in Nigeria. A case study of booldoz book club; The specific objectives include

STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS
The statement of the hypothesis for the study is stated in Null as follows
HO The reading habits of secondary school students in Nigeria are poor.
Ho The effect of booldoz book reading club on the reading habits of secondary school students in Nigeria is low.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study investigates the nature of the reading habits of secondary school students in Nigeria. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.
LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study was confronted with logistics and geographical factors.
