Abstract of Aspects of Cryopreservation of Clarias Gariepinus Obtained From the Lower River Niger

To service the growing demand of insufficient supply of (Clarias gariepinus) brookstock for aquaculture in Nigeria, Conserve valuable genetic resources and with the intent of obtaining a semen preservation protocol that can serve as a means of making fingerlings available to fish farmers all year round, this study assessed cryopreservation (Clarias gariepinus) of three specimen were discested and milt preserved. Result showed that there was significance difference between fresh semen and control. Cryopreservation of sperm, remains essentially a research activity that is just beginning to have commercial application. It is hope their efforts will be geared towards standardization of research result to enhance beneficial repeatability by interested fish farmers

Chapter One of Aspects of Cryopreservation of Clarias Gariepinus Obtained From the Lower River Niger

INTRODUCTION

JUSTIFICATION

As fish farming expands and harvesting of wild stocks becomes more intense, there is a growing need for techniques of gamete storage to facilitate replacement of extinct fishes.
Cryopreservation of sperm is now a widely used method for long term storage of fish milt. It is effective tool for conserving genetic materials in threatened and endangered species, which can also be used for genetic improvement through selecting breeding programme.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

1.       To evaluate the sperm characteristics of C. gariepinus.
2.       To determine efficacy of some extenders in the preservation of milt of C. gariepinus.
